Where the Risk Actually Sits
An exhibition hall is not a bedroom, and bedbugs are after people who stay still for hours. The higher risk in events work comes from the edges of the job rather than the show floor itself:
- Hotel and budget rooms on tours or long build-ups, and the suitcase that sat by the bed
- Soft stand furniture, sofas and beanbags that have been hired out many times
- Padded road cases, foam-lined crates and fabric banner bags stored between jobs
- Crew rest areas where people nap on seating during night shifts
- Kit bags kept in the van and then carried into the house
None of that means a venue has bedbugs. It means your belongings spend time in more places than most people's, whether the show is at ExCeL on your doorstep or on the other side of the country.

Coming Home From a Job
- Unpack on a hard floor, in the hall or the kitchen, not on the bed.
- Put travel clothes straight into the wash on a hot cycle and then the dryer, including anything worn but not dirty.
- Look along the seams and zips of the suitcase with a torch before it goes under a bed or into a wardrobe.
- Keep work kit out of the bedroom. Crates, lanyards, tool bags and banner bags belong in a cupboard or the van, not beside the bed.
- If a hotel room gave you bites, tell the hotel and treat your luggage as suspect until it has been checked.
If You Think You Have Brought Them Home
Signs usually appear first where the suitcase or kit bag was opened, and in the bed of whoever does the travelling. Check the mattress piping, the headboard joints and the carpet edge on that side of the room. If you are not sure what you are looking at, an inspection starts from £120.
For a home in Custom House, treatment works like any other flat or house. Heat deals with eggs in one visit, which suits someone whose next job is a week away; it costs more. Chemical needs two or three visits roughly a fortnight apart, which can be awkward to fit around a touring schedule. Either way, treatments are from £220, priced on the phone by the number of rooms.
Kit, Crates and the Employer
If you find signs on work equipment rather than your own things, tell your employer or the hire company in writing. That kit goes on to other people's homes and hotel rooms, and dealing with it is a job for the business, not for your household. Our commercial page for Newham covers treating workplaces and stores, and the hotel treatment page explains what happens when a room is reported.
Keep a note of where you stayed and when. If bites started a few days after a particular trip, that is useful to tell us when you ring about your place in Custom House.
Bedbug Control Custom House — Questions
Can bedbugs live in foam road cases?
The foam and the fabric linings give them places to hide, much like upholstery. Check cases that have been stored near sleeping areas.
Should I leave my suitcase in the car until it is checked?
Keeping it out of the bedroom is the important part. A hallway or cupboard with a hard floor is fine while you unpack and wash.
I only get bites after long build-ups. Could it be the hotel?
It could be. Report it to the hotel in writing and check your luggage before it goes back into your bedroom.
Is heat treatment better if I am away a lot?
It is usually one visit, so it is easier to fit between jobs. It costs more than chemical, and chemical still works if you can be around for the follow-up visits.
What should I do about bites from a work trip?
A pharmacist or GP can advise on skin reactions. Call 999 if anyone shows signs of a severe allergic reaction.
