Why Chemical Is Usually the Choice for a Flat
In a block in Canning Town, Plaistow or Beckton, your flat sits against others on several sides. A residual insecticide in the seams, bed frames and along the skirtings keeps working after we leave, which matters when the edges of the flat are where something could come through. It does not reliably kill eggs, which is why it is a course of visits, not one.
For how the product works and where it goes, read the London chemical treatment page for the full explanation. If the flat has bedbugs in every room and a long history, heat may be the better call; the heat treatment page for Newham explains when.
Living high up brings its own questions about lifts, rubbish chutes and the flats above and below. The Canning Town page deals with those.
Clearing the Floor in a Flat with Nowhere to Put Things
We need to reach the skirtings, the bed frames and the edges of the carpet. In a two-bedroom flat with a family in it, the floor is often the storage: bags under the beds, boxes along the wall, a pushchair in the bedroom. Clearing it is the part people find hardest.
- Start with the bedrooms. Pull everything out from under the beds and away from the walls.
- Bag soft things that can be washed. Put hard things, such as toys and shoes, in sealed boxes.
- Stack the bags and boxes in the middle of one room, off the carpet edge, rather than in the hallway or on the balcony, where they get moved around again.
- Pull beds and wardrobes a little away from the wall if you can do it safely.
- Leave the bed frames and mattresses where they are. Do not carry anything to the bin store.

Washing Bedding When There Is No Garden
Every visit starts with beds stripped and bedding hot-washed. Without a garden or a tumble dryer, that is a lot of washing in a small space. A few things help:
- Do it in batches over the two days before the visit, not all on the morning.
- A launderette with hot washes and big dryers is often quicker than drying on radiators in a flat.
- Carry dirty bedding in a sealed bag and bring it home in a clean one, so it does not pick anything up on the way back into the flat.
- Keep clean bedding bagged until the room is dry after the visit.
The same goes for clothes. Most can be washed or dried and kept; our guide on whether you need to throw clothes away covers the awkward ones.
Keeping Small Children Out Until It Dries
A visit takes one to two hours, and you can go back into the rooms once the surfaces are dry. In a small flat that means somewhere for the children to be during the visit and until the rooms have dried: a relative's flat, a park, a children's centre. Follow the instructions we give you on the day about which rooms, and for how long.
Babies' cots and anything a child puts in their mouth need a word with the technician before the visit starts.
The Fortnight Between Visits
The return visit is about 10 to 14 days later, to deal with the bedbugs that hatch from eggs the first visit could not reach. Sometimes a third is needed. In between:
- Keep sleeping in your own beds. Moving everyone onto the living room floor spreads them into a room that has not been treated.
- Do not spray shop products over the treated edges or wash the skirtings.
- Vacuum the floors but leave the edges alone, and empty the vacuum into a sealed bag.
- Note where and when you see anything, and tell us at the next visit.
If you rent from the council or a housing association, tell them in writing that treatment has started. Who arranges and pays depends on your tenancy; the Plaistow page covers what happens when the housing officer is involved. We are pest controllers, not legal advisers.
What It Costs
Treatments start from £220, and chemical costs less than heat. The figure depends on the number of rooms, and you get it on the phone before anything is booked. Ring 0800 955 1018. The Newham bedbug control page has the wider picture for busy buildings.

Bedbug Chemical Treatment Newham — Questions
Can we stay in the flat on the day of the visit?
You need to be out of the rooms being treated during the visit, and out of them until the surfaces are dry. We tell you on the day which rooms and for how long.
Where do we put everything from the floor in a small flat?
Bag it and stack it in the middle of one room, away from the walls. Do not take it out to the bin store or a neighbour's flat.
Why do we need a second visit?
The residual does not reliably kill eggs. The second visit, about 10 to 14 days later, deals with what hatches, and occasionally a third is needed.
Should the children sleep in the living room until it is over?
No. Keep everyone in their own beds. Moving sleepers into untreated rooms takes bedbugs with them.
Will the treatment reach the neighbours' flats?
No, it treats your flat. If you think they have bedbugs too, tell your landlord in writing so the flats around you can be looked at.
How much is chemical treatment for a flat?
Treatments start from £220. The exact figure depends on the number of rooms, and we give it on the phone.
