Why the First Treatment May Not Have Worked
There are only a handful of usual reasons, and most of them are nobody's fault in particular:
- A spray was used and the follow-up visit never happened, so eggs that survived the first visit hatched and carried on
- Shop-bought sprays or foggers pushed them deeper into the walls and furniture before anyone professional arrived
- A room was left out because it had no bites at the time
- The bed or sofa was moved, or someone slept elsewhere, and took them into a new room
- They came back in from a neighbouring flat or a visitor
Try to find out which it was. Ask whoever treated you what they used, how many visits were planned and how many took place. Our London guide on why bedbugs reappear after treatment goes through each cause.

Is It Worth an Inspection First?
If you are certain they are still there, because you have seen live ones, go straight to treatment. If all you have is bites and doubt, an inspection from £120 tells you whether it is bedbugs, which rooms, and how much, before you spend more. When money is tight, spending a smaller amount to avoid treating the wrong rooms is often the careful choice.
Getting the Most From One Visit
Heat treatment kills eggs as well as live bugs and is usually one visit, which suits anyone who has been let down by a missed follow-up. It costs more than chemical. Chemical costs less but works as a course of two or three visits, so ask on the phone how many visits the figure covers before you agree to anything.
Whichever you choose, the preparation is where you save money:
- Do exactly what the prep list says and nothing more dramatic.
- Do not throw out the bed or the mattress unless we advise it.
- Stop using shop sprays now, so they are not driven further in.
- Keep sleeping in your own bed until the visit.
- Tell us every room anyone has slept in since the first treatment.
It also pays to be completely open with us about the first treatment, including anything you tried yourself. Nobody will judge a shop spray or a skipped visit; knowing about it simply tells us where to look harder.
Paying for It
Treatments start at £220 and the exact figure is given on the phone before anything is booked, so you know where you stand. If you rent in Shepherd's Bush, report the problem in writing to the landlord or agent before paying again; who pays depends on the tenancy and the cause. The Hammersmith and Fulham page has more on fitting treatment into a working week.

Bedbug Control Shepherd's Bush — Questions
Should I go back to the company that treated me first?
If they planned follow-up visits that never happened, it is fair to ask them to complete the course. If they did everything and the problem is still there, a second opinion makes sense.
Is heat always better after chemical has failed?
Not always. If chemical failed because a visit was missed, a properly completed chemical course can work. We will tell you which one your situation needs.
Can I save money by treating just the bedroom?
Only if the other rooms are clear. Treating one room when two have them is how people end up paying a third time.
I am still getting bites. Is that normal after treatment?
Some bites in the days after a chemical visit can happen while they cross the residue. Bites weeks after a completed course mean it needs looking at again. For the skin itself, a pharmacist or GP can help; call 999 for signs of a severe allergic reaction.
