Unpack Somewhere Hard and Bright
Do not carry the bags up to the bedroom. Empty them on a hard floor near the door, or in the garden or on a balcony if you have one, with good light. Bedbugs are easier to spot on a pale, hard surface, and anything that drops out is not landing in carpet or under a bed.
- Clothes and towels straight into a bag and on to the hottest wash the labels allow, then a hot tumble dry.
- Sleeping bags and pillows washed if the label allows, or tumble dried on a hot setting for a good long cycle.
- Rucksacks emptied fully, pockets turned out, seams and straps checked with a torch, then vacuumed.
- Wash bags and shoes looked over and kept in the hall for a while rather than the bedroom.

The Tent Itself
A tent cannot go in a washing machine, and it rarely needs to. Dry it outside, in the park or the garden, and shake it out well. Look along the seams, the door zips and the pockets, especially if the tent was borrowed or bought second-hand. Then fold it into a sealed bag and store it away from where anyone sleeps: a shed, the loft hatch or a cupboard by the door, never under the bed.
Were Those Festival Bites Bedbugs?
Probably not. Midges, mosquitoes and fleas are far more likely outdoors, and bites from them turn up within hours. Bedbug bites can take days to show, and some people do not react at all. If bites keep appearing after a week or two at home, in rows or clusters, and new ones arrive overnight, that is when to look at your own bed. Bedbugs or something else goes through the look-alikes.
If you want to know why the ankles and wrists are bitten but not the rest of you, our guide on clothes and pyjamas explains it. For sore or infected bites, a pharmacist or GP can help; call 999 for signs of a severe allergic reaction.
If Something Did Come Home
Check the mattress seams, the bed frame joints and the skirting nearest the bed. If you find bugs, keep sleeping in the same bed; moving to the sofa spreads them. Hot-wash the bedding and ring us. An inspection from £120 confirms what it is. Treatments start from £220, priced on rooms and on heat or chemical, and the figure is given on the phone. For an Alexandra Park household caught early, that is often a single room. The Haringey borough page has more, and the same unpacking habits work after any trip, whether it ended in Alexandra Park or somewhere else entirely.
Bedbug Control Alexandra Park — Questions
Should I throw away a borrowed tent just in case?
No. Dry it, shake it out, check the seams and store it sealed and away from bedrooms. There is rarely any reason to bin it.
Can a sleeping bag go in the tumble dryer?
Most can on a gentle heat setting, but follow the label. A long, hot cycle is what kills anything hiding in it.
I shared a tent with friends and they have bites. Should I worry?
Watch your own bed for a couple of weeks. Most outdoor bites are not bedbugs. If new bites keep appearing at home, check the mattress.
Do bedbugs live outdoors?
They live where people sleep, so a tent or a sleeping bag used by someone else can carry them. Open grass and woodland are not where they settle.
