Bedbugs get into vans the same way they get into homes: in bags, bedding and belongings, often from a campsite, a hired van, a second-hand purchase or a friend who borrowed it. Once in, they settle where people sleep, and in a van that can be a fixed bed, a dinette that folds down, or a bunk over the cab.
Why a Small Space Is Harder
In a house, bedbugs stay close to the bed and the rest of the room is often clear. In a van, everything is close to a bed. Seat cushions are beds at night, lockers sit under the mattress, and trim, panelling and furniture are joined with many small gaps. There is simply more hiding place per square foot, and much of it is built in rather than movable.
Look at the seams and zips of the cushions and mattress, the joints of the bed base and the lockers beneath it, curtain tracks and folds, and the edges of the panelling near the beds. Dark spotting, pale shed skins and live bugs are the signs, just as in a bedroom.
Stored Vans Are Not Empty of Them

A common assumption is that a van left on the drive or in storage over the winter will clear itself. It will not reliably do so. Bedbugs can go a long time without feeding, and a cold spell does not reach evenly into cushions and lockers. The first trip of the season can simply wake them up.
If the van was used last season and anyone had bites on board, check it before the first trip, not after.
Why a Van Is Not Treated Like a Room
The methods we use in homes are built around rooms. A van has its own complications: gas bottles and appliances, a leisure battery, sealed windows, plastic trim and vinyl surfaces, and fabrics that may not be removable. Several of those are exactly the heat-sensitive things that come out of a room before heat treatment, and some of them cannot come out of a van at all.
So we do not quote for a van the way we quote for a bedroom. Ring us, describe it, and send photos if you can. We will tell you honestly what we can do with it and what we cannot, and whether the house needs looking at as well.
Bringing Things Back Into the House
The bigger risk is often the traffic between the van and the home. Bedding, cushions and bags go back and forth all season.
- Carry bedding and clothes from the van indoors in sealed bags.
- Take them straight to a hot wash and a full hot dry.
- Leave the van’s cushions and pillows in the van rather than bringing them into a bedroom.
- Unpack bags on a hard floor away from the bedrooms.
- Check your own bed at home for the next few weeks.

If the House Has Them Too
If bites start at home after a trip, treat the house as its own job. The bedrooms can be treated by heat or by chemical treatment, and treatments start from £220. If you are unsure whether the van brought them in, an inspection of the house from £120 tells you what is there. The Hounslow page explains the choice.
Related Questions
Can I use a bug bomb in the caravan?
We would not. Foggers tend to push bedbugs deeper into gaps, and in a small space with gas appliances they bring their own risks.
Will a hot summer day in a closed van kill them?
Not reliably. The heat does not reach evenly into cushions, lockers and panelling, and the bugs move to the coolest spots.
Should I get rid of the van cushions?
Not before anyone has looked. Carrying them through the house can spread them, and replacements go straight back into the same van.
We hired a motorhome and now have bites. What should we do?
Tell the hire company in writing, check your luggage and your beds at home, and ring us if you find signs.
