Clutter Does Not Cause Them
Bedbugs feed on blood, not dirt, food or dust. A spotless flat can have them and a chaotic one may never see one. They arrive in bags, furniture, clothes and visitors’ belongings, and where they end up has nothing to do with how often the floor gets hoovered.
If you have been putting off calling because you are embarrassed about the state of the room, please do not. We are there for the insects. Small rented rooms that hold a whole life’s possessions are normal in London, and we plan around them.
Why It Still Matters
Every box, pile and bag near the bed is another set of folds and edges to shelter in. That has three effects. The bugs are harder to spot early, so a problem grows before anyone notices. An inspection takes longer and can miss them. And treatment has to reach places that are buried.
With chemical treatment, insecticide only works where it is applied, so a skirting hidden behind a stack of boxes stays untreated. With heat, the air moves round the room, but dense piles warm slowly and can leave cool pockets that the thermal camera then has to find. Either way, a clearer room is a quicker, more thorough job.
What to Clear
The priority is the zone around the bed and along the walls, because that is where bedbugs live. The middle of a room matters much less.
- Clear the floor under the bed completely; storage boxes there are the first to go.
- Pull things back from the skirting boards so the edges of the floor can be reached.
- Empty the bedside table and anything within arm’s reach of the pillow.
- Put loose clothes and soft items in sealed clear bags, and keep them in the room unless we tell you otherwise.
- Wash and tumble-dry what you can, hot, a bag at a time.
Keep the bags in the room rather than carrying them to a friend’s place or another bedroom; moving them is how a one-room problem becomes a two-room one. The London guide to preparing for heat treatment has the full removal list for heat.
What Can Stay

Furniture stays where it is for both treatments, because we need to treat behind and under it. Wardrobes can stay full for heat, though we may ask you to loosen tightly packed rails and shelves so warm air can get between things. Books on shelves, pictures on walls and most of what is in drawers can usually stay too.
What does not stay for heat is anything heat damages: aerosols, candles, medication, vinyl records, plants and some electronics. For chemical treatment, strip the bed, hot-wash the bedding, and get the floor as clear as you can. Ask when you book if you are unsure about a particular item.
If It Feels Like Too Much
Sometimes a room is so full that clearing it feels impossible. Say so on the phone. It does not mean we cannot help; it means we plan it differently, perhaps one corner or one room at a time, or with more of the work done on the day. Hiding the problem for another month only gives the bugs more time.
If you share a flat, one person’s crowded room can hold things up for everyone. That is worth a calm conversation rather than a row. The Herne Hill page explains what bites turning up in a second bedroom mean, and the Lambeth page covers treatment for renters generally.
Keeping It Clear Afterwards
After treatment, a bit less stuff under and around the bed makes it far easier to notice if anything comes back. Pale bedding, a bed pulled slightly away from the wall and no storage underneath are small habits that pay off. The London guide to where bedbugs hide that gets missed shows which spots to glance at.
Related Questions
Do I have to throw my things away before treatment?
No. Clearing means moving and bagging, not binning. Throwing things out before treatment can carry bugs through the building.
Can I store my bags at a friend's house until it is over?
Please do not. Anything that leaves the room untreated may take bedbugs with it to wherever it goes.
Will you judge the state of my room?
No. The job is the bedbugs, not the housekeeping. Tell us what the room is like when you ring 0800 955 1018 so we can plan the visit properly.
Is heat better than chemical for a cluttered room?
Often, because it does not rely on reaching every surface by hand, but dense piles still need loosening. We will say which suits your room once we know what it is like.
