Getting Your Teenager on Board

A treatment works far better when the person who uses the room understands why the rules matter. Explain it plainly: bedbugs are not a sign of a dirty room, they arrive on bags and clothes like anyone else’s, and the clear-out is about giving them nowhere to hide. Most teenagers take it better when they are asked to help than when their room is emptied while they are out.

Give them jobs they can own: bagging their clothes, deciding what stays and what goes to the wash, packing electronics. Agree that nothing leaves the room to a friend’s house until it is treated. Sleepovers are the obvious way it travels, in both directions.

Clutter: What Has to Come Off the Floor

• Clothes on the floor, over chairs and in piles get washed and sealed in bags.
• Bags, backpacks and sports kit are emptied, checked and washed where they can be.
• Cardboard boxes, stacks of paper and old packaging are best cleared out of the room.
• Anything under the bed comes out so we can reach the frame and the carpet edge.

The aim is a floor we can see and a bed we can get round. It does not need to be tidy in the parental sense; it needs to be clear.

Gaming Chairs, Desks and Electronics

A gaming chair is a real concern. Its padded seams, stitched panels and the gap between the seat and backrest are just the kind of places bedbugs use, and if someone spends evenings in it, it may be as affected as the bed. Electronics matter most if you choose heat treatment. Consoles, PCs, monitors, speakers and chargers are on the list of things that may need to come out of the room first, along with aerosols such as deodorant sprays. With chemical treatment the electronics can usually stay, but the floor has to be clear and bedding washed before each of the two or three visits.

After the Treatment

A teenager who does not react to bites may be the last person to notice if anything is still there. Ask them to check the bed and chair every few days for the first few weeks and to tell you straight away about spots on the sheets.
