Why Everyone in the Room Is Involved
Beds in a shared room tend to sit close together, often touching the same wall. Children climb from one bunk to another, sit on each other’s beds, and leave clothes and toys in shared piles on the floor. Bedbugs follow people, and in a room like this every bed is within easy reach of the one where they were first found.
Bites are not a reliable guide to who has them. Some people react badly, some get a few small marks, some show nothing at all. The child with no bites may be sleeping on the most affected mattress. Our guide on how bedbugs find you explains why they settle where people sleep rather than where the bites show up.

Bunk Beds, Cots and Floor Mattresses
- Bunk beds have more joints, slats and bolt holes than a single bed, and the top bunk’s underside is easy to forget. Every part of the frame gets looked at.
- A cot is small but still has joints and a mattress edge. Tell us the child’s age when you ring so we can talk through what to do with the cot on the day.
- A mattress on the floor sits right against the carpet and skirting. It is not a reason to panic, but it is a reason to check the carpet edge carefully.
- Shared wardrobes and drawers hold everyone’s clothes, so washing and bagging has to cover the whole room, not one person’s things.
Keeping Everyone Where They Are
The natural reaction is to split the children up and move them into other rooms. That usually spreads the problem into a second and third bedroom. Keep people in their usual beds until the room is treated, strip and hot-wash all the bedding in the room at once, and keep the floor clear so nothing new builds up around the beds.
If a grown-up has been sharing a bed with a child who was bitten, check that bed too. Tell us who sleeps where, including anyone who sometimes sleeps in the room, so the treatment covers every bed that has been used.
Choosing the Treatment for a Shared Room
Chemical treatment is less expensive and suits a single room well, but a room several people sleep in needs everyone to stick to the course of visits: bedding washed each time, the floor clear, children kept out until surfaces are dry. Our page on chemical treatment in shared bedrooms covers keeping to that course. Heat treats the whole room in one visit and kills eggs, so it depends less on a busy household keeping the routine going; it costs more and takes most of a day.
Treatments start from £220, and the quote on the phone depends on how many rooms are involved and which method you choose. If you are in Harlesden or anywhere else in Brent and wonder whether one room can be done on its own: if the other bedrooms are clear, it usually can.
Bedbug Control Harlesden — Questions
Should the children sleep in the living room until it is treated?
It is better not to. Moving them tends to carry bedbugs to the sofa and makes a second area to treat.
My child has lots of bites and I have none. Is that possible?
Yes. People react differently. For itchy or sore bites, a pharmacist or GP can advise; call 999 for any signs of a severe allergic reaction.
Do we have to throw the bunk beds away?
Usually not. Frames and mattresses can be treated. Please do not throw anything out unless we advise it, because moving it through the house spreads them.
What do the children need to do on the day?
Stay out of the room while we work and until we say it is ready. We tell you what to do beforehand, and the instructions given on the day are the ones to follow.
