How the Shared Hall Comes Into It
Bedbugs mostly stay close to beds and sofas, so a hallway is not where you expect to find a colony. But a carpeted staircase with gaps under the skirting, used every day by people carrying bags, laundry and furniture past each other, is a route between flats. A bed or sofa carried down those stairs to the kerb is the most common way it happens.
Old houses also have gaps: around pipes, under floorboards and behind skirtings that have shrunk over a century. Our guide on whether bedbugs can climb walls explains what surfaces they can use to get around.

Who Is Responsible for the Common Parts
The hall, stairs and landings in a converted house usually belong to the freeholder or are managed by the landlord or a managing agent, not by any one flat. If you think the shared parts are involved, tell whoever manages the building in writing and say what you have seen. Who pays for what depends on the leases, tenancies and the cause; we are pest controllers, not legal advisers.
It helps to talk to the other flats too. Nobody enjoys that conversation, but a neighbour who knows can check their own beds early, and a treatment that covers two flats at once is far better than treating one while the other quietly keeps them going.
What Gets Treated Outside Your Flat
We only treat areas we have permission to work in. If the shared parts are included, we look at the carpet edges where they meet the skirting, the gripper rods on each stair, landings outside affected doors, and anywhere furniture has stood. Bare stair treads with nothing to hide in are rarely a problem.
- Your flat is usually treated with heat or chemical in the normal way.
- The shared hall, if it needs anything, is normally given a residual insecticide along the edges rather than heated.
- After heat in a shared building, a light residual at the edges of your flat can help against anything coming back in from next door.
Keeping the Hallway Out of It
- Do not carry furniture through the hall to dump it. Keep it where it is until it has been treated or we advise otherwise.
- Bag laundry inside the flat. Tie it before it goes down the stairs to the machine or launderette.
- Keep shoes and bags off the stair carpet. Nothing left on the landing outside your door.
- Tell the building. In writing, with dates, so the shared parts can be looked at if needed.
Treatments start from £220. The price is given on the phone and depends on how many rooms, and whether shared areas in a Willesden house are part of the job. The Brent page has more on households that share space.
Bedbug Control Willesden — Questions
Can you treat just my flat if the landlord will not do the hallway?
Yes. We treat what we are allowed to treat. Tell us about the shared parts so we can advise on the edges of your own flat.
The flat upstairs had bedbugs last year. Could they have come from there?
It is possible in a converted house, but we cannot say without looking. An inspection from £120 shows what is in your flat now.
Is the hall carpet going to need replacing?
Usually not. The edges of the carpet can be treated. Do not pull it up or throw it out unless we advise it.
Should I warn the other flats?
It is worth doing. The sooner they check their own beds, the smaller any job in their flat will be.
