Why This Needs More Planning
A standard bed is a frame and a mattress. An adjustable bed has a motor, a control box, a hand control on a cable, hinged sections and a mattress designed to bend. A hospital-style bed may also have side rails and a pressure-relief mattress. Every hinge, cover seam and cable run is somewhere to check, and some of these parts are powered.
The person who sleeps in the bed matters just as much. If they cannot get up without help, or need to be near their bed during the day, the treatment has to fit around their care, not the other way round.

Equipment to Tell Us About
- Adjustable or electric beds, and whether they came from a care provider or were bought privately.
- Pressure-relief or air mattresses, and any pump or control unit attached to them.
- Hoists, commodes, wheelchairs, walking frames and riser recliner chairs.
- Any medication kept in the bedroom, including creams and inhalers.
If equipment belongs to a care provider or was supplied by a health service, let them know about the bedbugs too. They may have their own advice about cleaning or replacing it, and they are the people to ask about their own equipment.
Heat or Chemical Around Someone Who Cannot Move Easily
Heat finishes in one visit and reaches eggs, which means only one day of disruption. But the room has to be empty of people for most of that day, and medication and some powered or electronic equipment must come out first. Where the person can spend the day in another room or with family, heat is often the better choice.
Chemical treatment takes an hour or two a visit and the room is back in use once the surfaces are dry. It needs two or sometimes three visits, which means repeated bedding changes and clearing the floor. For someone who cannot be moved for a whole day, that may be the more practical route. We will tell you which fits once we understand the situation.
Planning the Day
- Ring and describe the room. The bed, the equipment, and how much the person can move.
- Agree where they will be. Another room, a relative’s home, or a day centre, depending on the treatment.
- Arrange the carers. If visits from carers fall during the treatment, let them know and plan around it.
- Remove medication and anything we list. We give you the list before the day.
- Follow the instructions given on the day. They cover when the room can be used again.
Treatments start from £220 and the price is given on the phone once we know how many rooms are involved. If you are not sure the marks you are seeing are bedbugs, an inspection confirms it before anything is booked. Bedbug Control Neasden — Questions
Can the adjustable bed be treated or does it need replacing?
Usually it can be treated. Tell us about the motor and control box when you ring. Please do not throw the bed out unless we advise it.
The person affected has thin skin and reacts badly to bites. What should we do?
Speak to their GP or a pharmacist about the skin. Call 999 if they show signs of a severe allergic reaction.
Can they stay in the room during chemical treatment?
No. They need to be out of the room while we work and until the surfaces are dry. We tell you how long on the day.
Their wheelchair has fabric seats. Does it need treating?
If it is used next to the bed, it should be checked. Tell us about it when you ring and we will say what it needs.
